Jonny Eberle tweets a message to his followers.

Jonny Eberle was required to check out Twitter for a class at NAU in 2010, and while most of his classmates dropped out of the social medium as soon as the class was over, he says, “I was intrigued with [its] immediacy and richness.” While he began promoting his film production company, Obscure Studios, in 2006-‘07 on MySpace, Blogger and YouTube, he jumped into Twitter as a good promotional platform. He cites the quote: “Facebook is a mirror for people who are fascinated by themselves. Twitter is a magnifying glass for people fascinated by the world.”

Chad Black will get real about Twitter.

Chad Black began using Twitter in 2010 when the Hardy and Schultz fires were raging near Flagstaff. He saw the value of instant information coming from multiple sources in real time, and says that, “Twitter revolutionized how I get information and how I also send it.” Soon after, he started FLAGscanner.com to post video reports of breaking news. This graduate of ASU’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and former news network vidoegrapher plans to talk about “how important it is to use it properly, and how to make sure people can effectively find the information you are posting by using hash tags and brief sentences. Kim Yuhl uses Twitter to promote her business.

Kim Yuhl started Fizz Bath Shop in downtown Flagstaff 2½ years ago, and has built her clientele primarily through Facebook and Twitter, creating what she calls “a community based on sharing information and building relationships.” She plans on discussing real, practical Twitter uses for small businesses. She knows her social media, all right. The promotional video of her shop that she entered in My Business Story on YouTube won a recent contest on that channel. Flagstaff Communicators celebrated its first meeting of the year with a Meet & Greet Networking reception at the Speakeasy VIP Lounge at Collins Pub in downtown Flagstaff. Guests learned how Flagstaff Communicators can help their businesses and careers through education, philanthropy and networking. Tips on better use of Twitter, Facebook and other social media strategies were discussed.

Flagstaff Communicators is celebrating its 17th year of operation serving communications professionals, nonprofit organizations, communications students and the general public.

There have been many changes over the years — membership, organizational focus, meeting locations — but the one constant has been individuals who have stepped up to continue the vision of the organization when it was founded in 1995.

One of those individuals is Jim Anderson, partner in GoalBusters Consulting LLC. Founded by Alice Ferris, ACFRE, GoalBusters is celebrating its 11th year in 2012.

Jim has served for the past few years as president of Communicators. But as GoalBuster’s national and international business has grown (who says there’s a recession), the time has come for Jim to devote more time to those endeavors.

Jim and Alice were instrumental in bringing back Navajo Public Radio in Tuba City in late 2011.

As if he wasn’t busy enough, Jim has been named president-elect of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), Northern Arizona.

The organization is planning its Arizona 2012 State Conference (Aug. 1-3) in Sedona, so Jim will have his hands full helping to organize the conference, as well as his usual business travels. As of this post he was touching down in Vancouver, Canada for an AFP event.

Representatives from the Arizona Daily Sun, the Flagstaff Business News and the Navajo-Hopi Observer presented information about “Getting your news into local print media” at the May 19 meeting of Flagstaff Communicators, held the City of Flagstaff Aquaplex.

Panel members presented information on the proper way to submit media releases, who to contact in local media for potential coverage of events and news items for businesses and nonprofit organizations and how to submit calendar items in a timely manner.

The media representatives also provide contact information to local media representatives, marketing kits and advertising rate card information.

The next meeting, tentatively scheduled for Thursday, June 9 at the Aquaplex, will focus on reaching the local broadcast media.
